Special Events

Literacy Volunteers – Pitt County offers a variety of free adult tutoring services to all adults in our community. Our ability to do so depends greatly upon contributions of time and resources from individuals, civic organizations, local businesses, grants, and United Way funding.

Approximately one fourth of our operating budget is generated through annual special events and made possible by support from our Board of Directors, staff, and community volunteers. Contact us at 252-353-6578 to learn how you can become involved!

Enriching Minds Series
The Enriching Minds Series is designed to bring informative, inspirational, and entertaining guest authors to Greenville. Authors represent a broad range of issues engaging participants both intellectually and emotionally. Tickets and sponsorships are sold for the VIP reception, seminar, and keynote author luncheon.

Recent authors included:
- Margaret Maron - North Carolina mystery writer – author of the Deborah Knott and Sigrid
  Harald series.
- Barbara and Elizabeth Pagano – experts in leadership coaching for successful
  business relationships. Authors of The Transparency Edge.
- Connie Glaser – referencing how to personally and professionally Communicate with Clout!
  Author of What Queen Esther Knew: The Best Advice for Women in 2000 years.

Toast to Literacy
The Literacy Volunteers – Pitt County Toast to Literacy Party has been held for over ten years. Each year, one generous host family opens their home to all “friends of literacy” for a fabulous wine and cheese party provided by the Board of Directors. Patrons are asked to make a donation to attend. This event is a wonderful opportunity to bring our many friends up to date on the programs and services currently offered by LV-PC and for the Board to say “thank you” to our many supporters!

Your Word Against Mine – A Community SCRABBLE® Challenge
This event challenges local wordsmiths to match wits against other teams for the title of best “SCRABBLERS” in the area. Tables of four players compete against each other in fast, fun competition for prizes and bragging rights. To increase the fun and competition, tables may purchase (for a fee) peeks at the dictionary and extra letters! FUN is the key word for this event with a little bit of strategy and wordsmithing thrown in. Donations are received through table sponsorships.
