Success Story
LR came to Literacy Volunteers - Pitt County because his wife’s eyesight was beginning to fail. She had always handled the banking activities. LR realized that he needed to start taking care of reading the mail, understanding the bills and writing checks himself. Those were the everyday, practical activities he wanted to do but he also had a sincere desire to improve his reading skills. Reading had always been very difficult for him.
LR and his tutor, began work on many of the basics. LR admitted that letter sounds “gave him fits”, and he found it difficult to blend sounds together. LR is proud of his ability to read some of the books available to him in the LV-PC library.
To address his need to write checks, LR attended a mini-course offered by LV-PC on maintaining a checking account. He now feels more confident about using a calculator, filling out deposit slips, writing checks, maintaining a check register and reconciling a bank statement.
He truly enjoys learning and feels very good about himself and his ability to better take care of his family’s finances.
