Tutors
Tutoring Opportunities
The following opportunities are available to tutors after completing initial tutor training.
First Steps - ABE Orientation (Adult Basic Education)
- A four-session class of 1.5 hours each held 4-5 times per year. Curriculum is already
developed for this class. Student assessment and intake is conducted at the fourth session.
ESL Orientation – (English as a Second Language)
- A three-session class of 1.5 hours each held 4-5 times per year. Curriculum is already
developed for this class. Student assessment and intake is conducted at the third session.
Arrangements are made for interpreters as necessary.
Computer Class I and II
- Computer I – beginner class. An eight-session class of 1.5 hours each held 2-3 times per
year. Curriculum is already developed for this class.
- Computer II – intermediate class. An eight-session class of 2 hours each held 2-3 times per
year. Curriculum is already developed for this class.
- Computer III is in development.
ABE and ESL Assessors – requires some additional training
- Assessors are needed to conduct student intake interviews and assessments using
standardized testing instruments. These activities are coordinated with the ABE and ESL
student orientation sessions.
Job Application Class I and II
- Level 1 – An eight-session class of 1.5 hours each. Curriculum is already developed
for this class.
- Level II – A five-session class of 1.5 hours each. Curriculum is already developed
for this class.
Wilson Language System (ABE) - requires some additional training
- 12-week cycles using the Wilson Language System. This system is very structured and
was developed for persons with learning difficulties.
ABE Low and High Beginning Small Groups
- 12-week cycles using the Voyager series with Reading for Today and Focus on Phonics
as supplements.
ABE Low and High Intermediate Small Groups
- 12-week cycles using the Voyager series with Reading Wise and additional outside reading
as supplements.
ESL Literacy, Low, and High Beginning Small Groups
- 12-week cycles using the LifePrints series with the Oxford Picture Dictionary and other
material as supplements.
ESL Low and High Intermediate Small Groups
- 12-week cycles using the LifePrints series with other material as supplements.
Literacy Volunteers - Pitt County Basic Literacy/ESL Tutor
Job Description
1. Attain tutor certification by completing required Tutor Training Workshop.
2. Meet with your adult learner(s) a minimum of once weekly, for 1½ hours each session
3. Carefully prepare lessons designed specifically for the needs and goals of your learner(s),
concentrating lessons on reading, writing, communication and comprehension skills, and
other life skills as needed.
4. Keep records of your learners’ progress, dates and hours taught, goals reached, etc. for
required quarterly progress reports.
5. Attend a minimum of one continuing education In-Service per year.
7. Maintain a positive attitude of support and praise for your learner(s), involving him/her in
decisions about the learning process and helping to build his/her confidence.
8. Continue to evaluate your learners’ progress, selecting new materials appropriate for
reaching changing goals.
